With ever-increasing digitization across industries, IT security is on everyone’s mind, with huge numbers of businesses of all sizes suffering data breaches, and the costs in the UK alone being counted in the billions of pounds per year.

It should come as no surprise, then, that IT professionals are in high demand – so high, in fact, that they have an estimated 0% unemployment rate, and will continue to be in short supply into the next decade.

There may be a solution to this shortage of security specialists, though. Neural networks and all types of machine learning solutions are starting to see use in digital security, and can massively increase the effectiveness of the human staff with penetration testing, breach detection, and software testing.

Breach detection and response

An emerging reality of IT security is that data breaches will happen, regardless of how secure your system is. Breach detection and response, therefore, will play an increased role in the coming years. Luckily for business owners everywhere, neural networks are well suited to rapidly identifying when a breach has occurred, and even what sort of vulnerability the intruder used. Fundamentally, identifying if a breach has occurred will involve looking through a huge amount of logging data for discrepancies. For humans, then, this is a painstaking manual process. Neural networks, however, are perfect for pattern recognition tasks, massively reducing the time taken, and maybe even able to identify breaches as they happen.

Limiting software vulnerabilities

Like penetration testing, QA testing software requires large amounts of time and iterative testing. Neural networks can, however, be put to this task as well, reducing or even eliminating zero-day vulnerabilities.

While the technology is still in its infancy, neural networks are looking to be an important tool for digital security in the coming years.

Improved penetration testing

Once a business is locked up tight with endpoint security, like that from in place, they may be inclined to relax a bit, but there is always work to be done for security professionals, such as penetration testing. Penetration testing takes huge amounts of time to do manually, even with tools that allow a lot of processes to be automated. It is, however, perfectly suited to routine penetration testing, reducing costs and leaving the experts free to work on the more technical aspects.
